Plagiarism Police
Surau Journal of Islamic Studies enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy against plagiarism. Any instance of plagiarism identified in manuscripts submitted for publication will be addressed with stringent measures proportional to the severity of the violation.
Plagiarism is defined as the appropriation or close imitation of another author’s language, ideas, or expressions, presenting them as original without proper acknowledgment. Manuscripts must be original, unpublished works, and should not contain any uncredited material from other sources. Verbatim excerpts from other sources must be clearly demarcated through: (1) indentation, (2) quotation marks, and (3) accurate citation of the original source. For content exceeding fair use limits or graphical material reproduced from other works, explicit permission from copyright holders must be obtained, and proper attribution to the original creators must be provided.
All submitted manuscripts undergo similarity checks using Turnitin or equivalent plagiarism detection software. Based on the similarity index, the following actions will be undertaken by the Managing Editor:
- Similarity Index above 40%: Manuscripts will be rejected outright with no opportunity for revision or resubmission due to significant issues related to citation or paraphrasing.
- Similarity Index between 20% and 40%: Manuscripts will be returned to authors for comprehensive revision, including proper citation of all identified similarities, and substantial paraphrasing even if citations are present.
- Similarity Index below 20%: Manuscripts may be accepted for publication or may require minor citation adjustments to ensure all borrowed material is appropriately credited.
For manuscripts falling within the 20% to under 40% similarity range, authors are required to thoroughly revise their manuscripts by adding necessary citations, enhancing paraphrasing, and submitting a new similarity report demonstrating a similarity index of less than 20%.
